On their trip to Tesco, Newry today (11/10/16), Primary 5-7 explored how food is preserved and the differences in prices of fresh, frozen and tinned foods. They also explored the hidden sugars in foods and drinks. Throughout they were reminded about a healthy diet and balanced meals.
The P5-P7 class had a study of food, where it comes from, how it is preserved until it arrives on the shelves and the differences in prices from fresh, frozen or tinned food. We also investigated healthy diet and the problem facing pupils with identifying hidden sugars in food. An app which reads bar codes and displays the amount of sugar in different foods shocked our pupils. Again the advice is to read the labels. The trip was part of our World Around Us topic on Feed and Farmimg.
