St Michael's PS received a grant from Live Here, Love Here to improve outdoor facilities for all pupils from P1-P7.
A structured play area was planned with the help of Ms Claire Devlin who trains teachers on outdoor play. The facilities include an enlarged sand play area, mud kitchen, climbing platform and a slide. Storage for outdoor resources has been purchased.
Four raised plant beds have been constructed to enable children to plant vegetables which can be grown, picked and cooked by the children. A small orchard of apple trees is planned and again the fruit will be picked by the pupils to eat. Benches and tables will allow pupils to work outside when the weather improves.
The front of the school will be planted out with shrubs, climbers and wild flowers. The idea is to provide support for pollinator insects. A pathway and gates have been fitted and a hedge to enclose the garden will be added. A bug hotel will be included to allow pupils to explore minibeasts.
